Eagles Rally Past College of Charleston for First Win

DURHAM, N.C. — Freshman Stipan Madzar fought back to win the last match of the day to finish off a 4-3 non-conference victory for the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team over visiting College of Charleston on Thursday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts.

Senior Miles Clark and juniors Amit Baran and Sebastian Pino all won in singles to start NCCU's rally after trailing 2-0 early in the match.

The Eagles improved to 1-3 on the season with their first win. The Cougars slip to 4-2.

Pino tallied NCCU's first point with a 6-3, 6-3 win over junior No. 4 Johnny Wang. Clark leveled the match at 2-2 with his ensuing 6-3, 6-4 victory on court three over senior No. 3 Karl Mosterd. Baran rallied to then put the Eagles ahead with his 0-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over sophomore No. 2 Noah Borges.

Junior Robby Krick briefly tied the team score at 3-3 for the Cougars with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over freshman Shaka Cristellotti.

However, Madzar won five straight games to finish off his comeback atop NCCU's lineup. Madzar was trailing 4-1 in the third set when he strung together his late run to complete a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph over graduate student Guido Argentini.

Madzar, Clark and Pino all have matching 2-2 singles records for the maroon and gray. Baran (1-3) got in the win column for the first time this season.

In the tightest doubles match of the day on court two, Mosterd and sophomore Jake Fraunfelder outlasted Pino and Madzar in a tiebreaker. Pino and Madzar jumped out 3-0 in the race to seven points, but Mosterd and Fraunfelder won seven of the next nine servers to win the narrow 7-6 bout with a 7-5 score in the tiebreaker.

CofC also won the top doubles match 6-2 to secure the first team point. The Cougars then claimed a default win at No. 6 singles to take their early 2-nil team lead.
