Houston Wins Third Straight Singles Match in NCCU’s Loss to UNCG

DURHAM, N.C. — Freshman Jade Houston picked up the only team point for the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team in a 6-1 non-conference home loss to UNCG Wednesday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts.

Senior Maru Berghaus and junior Ivana Dragovic netted their third doubles win of the season for the only other NCCU win on the day.

The Spartans remained undefeated on the season at 4-0.

Berghaus and Dragovic picked up their second straight win and third of the season at No. 2 doubles, but a 6-2 loss at No. 1 doubles and a forfeit loss at No. 3 doubles helped the Spartans claim the first team point. Berghaus and Dragovic cruised to their triumph over UNCG senior Emily Ory and freshman Juliana Craft by a 6-1 score.

After being given a forfeit win at No. 6 singles, sophomore Hanna Giddings pulled the Spartans to within one point of the team victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win over NCCU senior No. 2 Maru Berghaus.

Graduate student Eugenia Camacho clinched the team triumph for the visitors with her win on court four. Camacho (3-1) topped Dragovic by a 6-2, 6-4 margin.

In the top singles draw, senior Brianna Gomez had to rally to defeat NCCU freshman Josefa Fernandez. Gomez fought back to win 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 in a match that had Fernandez playing atop NCCU's lineup for the first time in her young collegiate career.

Giddings and Gomez remained undefeated on the season at 4-0.

Houston secured the maroon and gray point at the third position in the lineup. She rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1 conquest of Ory. Houston has won three consecutive singles matches.

Houston and Fernandez lead the Eagles with matching 3-4 singles records.

In the final match of the day, Craft topped NCCU freshman Maria Picazo by a score of 6-2, 7-5.

NC Central (1-6 Overall) will next begin Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play when the Eagles travel to Greensboro, North Carolina, to play rival North Carolina A&T State University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
