Four Eagles with Double-Digit Kills in Road Win over the Spartans

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior middle blocker McKayla Young smashed a career-high 19 kills to lead the North Carolina Central University volleyball team to a 3-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) road win at Norfolk State University on Sunday afternoon.

A total of four Eagles recorded 10 or more kills and six Eagles reached double-digit digs as NCCU secured the 25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 25-15 triumph. Young led the group with her 19 kills on 30 swings with just one error for a scorching .600 hitting percentage.

NC Central (9-13 Overall, 8-5 MEAC) locked up a winning league record for a second straight season. Norfolk State (8-16, 4-9) lost for only the fourth time at home all season.

The two teams split the first two sets, with Norfolk State's attack affecting both results. In the first set, NCCU's final four points to close out a six-point win were tallied on four hitting errors by the Spartans. However, in the second set Norfolk State did not commit a hitting error on the way to a .361 hitting percentage that helped level the match.

The Eagles were the ones to heat up offensively in the final two sets to complete the season-series sweep.

NCCU had a sizzling 368 hitting percentage over those two frames to finish with a .258 mark for the match. Young had eight of her 19 kills in the third set, including three spikes over NCCU's last four points in the five-point win. Senior Ammaarah Williams paced the Eagles with five kills in the fourth set, which included a closing 18-8 run to win by 10 points.

Williams recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and team-best 14 digs. Senior Arlanda Faulkner notched her fourth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 12 digs while junior Abby Vacha netted her first double-double with season-best totals of 10 kills and 13 digs.

Sophomore Lauren Janok, a five-time MEAC Setter of the Week this season, once again had another strong performance with a match-high 46 assists to go along with 12 digs. Redshirt sophomore Maria Almeida added 13 digs and senior Celene Morris served up two of NCCU's three aces.

Senior Rachel Williams led the Spartans with 15 kills. Classmate Nicole Rodriguez finished with a match-high 29 digs.

NC Central will next host MEAC rival South Carolina State University in its Senior Night match on Friday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m.
