Eagles Drop Road Match to the Bison

Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior Celene Morris registered a career-high 10 kills for the North Carolina Central University volleyball team in a 3-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) road loss at Howard University on Friday evening.

The Bison won their seventh straight match to remain tied for first place in the MEAC standings. Howard (13-11 Overall, 10-2 MEAC) held off the Eagles by a final score of 25-16, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22.

Morris tallied her team-high 10 kills on 23 attempts with just two errors for a .348 hitting percentage. She also led the maroon and gray with nine digs.

Seniors Ammaarah Williams and Arlanda Faulkner both contributed nine kills while sophomore setter Lauren Janok logged a match-high 29 assists

Howard posted a staggering .571 hitting percentage to win the first set by nine points. The Bison rattled off 18 kills on 28 attempts with just two errors.

The Eagles responded with a strong second set in which they never trailed. Faulkner, the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, paced NCCU to the four-point set win with five kills and an ace in that set. Morris also chipped in three kills over that span.

However, NCCU was held to a negative hitting percentage in the third set. That allowed Howard to regain a 2-1 set lead with an eight-point win. The Bison maintained that momentum with a wire-to-wire win in the fourth set. NCCU made a couple of runs in the final frame including pulling within two as late as 22-20, but Howard maintained the edge to win by three points.

Freshman Dami Awojobi recorded a career-high 15 kills to pace the Bison. It was the second straight match Awojobi had her best offensive match of her rookie season. In the same freshmen class, twin sisters Cimone Woodard and Bria Woodard finished with 14 and 13 kills, respectively.

NC Central will conclude its road schedule for the regular season with a MEAC match at Norfolk State University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
