BALTIMORE, Md. – In a contest that was separated by just seven total points over four sets, host Coppin State University was able to win three close sets over North Carolina Central University to claim a 3-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball victory Sunday afternoon.
The Coppin State Eagles squeaked out the 25-23, 24-26, 25-22, 25-21 triumph. The two programs split the season series, with the home institution winning each time. CSU – the preseason favorites to win the MEAC – improved to 12-9 on the season and 6-3 in the league.
The maroon and gray senior duo of
Arlanda Faulkner and
Ammaarah Williams once again paced the NCCU attack with 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Williams also had a match-high eight block assists to finish with 19 points. Senior classmate
McKayla Young also reached double-digit points with six kills and eight blocks (one solo, seven assists).
Each set was tightly contested, with ties as late as 23-23 in the first set, 24-24 in the second set, and 22-22 in the third set. Coppin State completed the victory with a wire-to-wire win the in fourth set, but NCCU still was within two points as late as 23-21.
Senior Miajavon Coleman led the victors with 19 kills and she completed a double-double with 15 digs.
Sophomore setter Lauran Janok completed her third straight double-double and 10th double-double of the season for NCCU with team-best totals of 39 assists and 11 digs.
NC Central (6-12, 5-4) will next host Delaware State University on Friday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m.
