DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina Central University senior
Pablo Juez Torres was the only Eagle to win a set in a 7-0 non-conference road loss at Duke University on Sunday evening in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
The Blue Devils, who are receiving votes in the current Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Oracle Top-25 Rankings, won their second straight match on the day after defeating University of Kentucky, 4-1, earlier in the afternoon. Duke improved to 9-1 on the season after topping the Eagles.
Juez Torres looked dominate in his first set on court six, but Duke senior Samir Agadi was able to rally and win the three-set affair in a super set tiebreaker. Agadi's final comeback score was 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7).
Duke won the first five singles matches in straight sets.
Sophomore
Christos Dagklis had NCCU's next closest score, losing to freshman No. 3 Omni Kumar by set scores of 6-3 and 7-5.
Senior
Sebastian Bromley had a tough test by facing a nationally-ranked singles player in the fifth slot in the lineup. Freshman Andrew Zhang – ranked No. 113 individually – defeated Bromley 6-2, 6-1.
Sophomore
Thanos Spyropoulos was attempting to win a third straight match, but was defeated 6-2, 6-3 atop NCCU's lineup to a former All-ACC performer in senior Spencer Furman.
The Blue Devils won the top two doubles matches to seize the first point of the match. The No. 6 ranked team in the country in senior Nick Stachowiak and junior Sean Sculley were tested by Spyropoulos and Dagklis before setting for a 6-3 triumph.
NC Central will finally make its home debut in its next match when the Eagles entertain Campbell University on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m.
