Eagles Earn Two Singles Wins in Dual with the Phoenix

ELON, N.C. — Sophomore Thanos Spyropoulos and Christos Dagklis each won for the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team in a 5-2 non-conference road loss at Elon University Friday afternoon.

Spyropoulos won for a second straight time, defeating a reigning Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) all-conference performer in junior Kyle Frankel. Spyropoulos (2-2) leveled his singles record with his straight-set triumph over Frankel atop NCCU's lineup by a score of 7-6 (4), 6-2.

Dagklis (1-3) notched his first win of the early season playing in the third slot in the Eagles lineup. He also won his match in straight sets, knocking off junior Camilo Ponce by a 7-5, 6-1 margin.

Senior Pablo Juez Torres nearly picked up a third team point for the maroon and gray, going three sets in his battle on court six. Juez Torres was nipped 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 by sophomore Dino Bonetta.

Elon (1-4) – the defending CAA Men's Tennis Championship – earned its first win of the season after going to the NCAA Tournament last year as the Phoenix won the other three singles matches in straight sets by freshman No. 2 Nicholas Condos, junior No. 4 Chung-Han Tsai and senior No. 5 Jacob Bicknell.

The Phoenix claimed all three doubles matches for the initial team point. Ponce and freshman Sam Dively outlasted NCCU's middle tandem of junior Miles Clark and sophomore Amit Baran, 6-4, in the tightest doubles clash.

NC Central (0-4) will next play its fifth straight match on the road to start this season, but this time the Eagles will play in Durham as they visit neighbor Duke University for a 6 p.m. dual at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday at 6 p.m.
