Ranked Gamecocks Use Long Ball to Defeat NCCU

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Senior catcher Dalika Wallace drove in the lone North Carolina Central University run in a 19-1 road loss at nationally-ranked University of South Carolina on Wednesday.

The Gamecocks – ranked No. 17 by ESPN.com/USA Softball, No. 21 by D1softball.com and No. 22 by USA Today/NFCA Coaches – improved to 6-3 on the season by scoring 19 runs on 14 hits and seven walks.

South Carolina left little doubt to the outcome of the game by scoring 10 runs in the first innings and seven more in the second. The Gamecocks 3-4-5 hitters all went deep and they each finished with four RBI.

The Eagles used a two-out rally in the top of the third to score their run.

Junior third baseman K'Lea Parks drew a two out walk and then scored on a double ripped by Wallace to left field. Wallace moved to third on a senior Tehillah Duffy single, but a fly out ended the frame.

The consecutive base knocks by Wallace and Duffy were NCCU's lone hits.

NC Central (0-4) will next play four games in the Charleston Invitational co-hosted by the College of Charleston and Charleston Southern University on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 21-22.
