Ohio Escapes with Walk-Off Win over NCCU

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. — Junior second baseman Jacobia Johnson and senior left fielder Tamiera Sanchez both supplied the North Carolina Central University softball team with two-run hits, but Ohio University was able to score five runs in its last two innings to fight back from a four-run deficit to win, 7-6, at nearly midnight Friday night of the Charleston Invitational.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and trailing by two runs, the Bobcats were able to load up the bases after consecutive batters were hit by a pitch. An error in the outfield on the ensuing play allow two runs to score and tie the game.

Junior catcher Brooke Rice, who hit a two-run homer in the sixth to start Ohio's comeback attempt, then singled through the left side of the infield to knock in the game-winning, walk-off run.

Rice finished with three hits and three RBI.

The Bobcats went 2-0 on the day after defeating Army, 8-4, in the afternoon and have now won three straight games. Ohio finished the day 4-8 on the season.

Johnson collected two of NCCU's seven hits.

Sanchez provided the Eagles with an early 2-nil edge, driving in a pair of runs with a double in the top of the first. Her two-base hit to right center was NCCU's lone extra base hit.

Ohio quickly tied up the contest with their first two runs in the home half of the first, tallying three of their nine hits in early rally.

The maroon and gray pulled back ahead by scoring four runs in the third inning. Johnson capped that outburst with a two-run single up the middle of the infield.

NCCU scored all six of its runs on the Bobcats starter. However, the Eagles were held scoreless for the final 4 1/3 innings by sophomore reliever Baylie Thornhill (1-3), who earned her first win as Ohio rallied late.

Juniors Olivia Daniel, Joirea Dumas and Nadia Blevins along with sophomore Madison Mifsud all had hits for the Eagles. Junior Kiara Hurley (0-3) suffered the complete-game loss due to three unearned runs in the seventh.

NC Central (0-5) will continue play in the Charleston Invite with two games on Saturday, competing against Army (12:15 PM) and co-host Charleston Southern University (4:45 PM) at the CSU Softball Complex.
