Frida Cnossen was the only North Carolina Central University player to win a set as the Lady Eagles were eliminated, 4-0, in the semifinals of the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Tennis Championships by South Carolina State University Friday morning at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
NCCU concluded its season with an 8-14 record. The eight wins are the most by the program since 2015. The Lady Eagles earned the third seed from the Southern Division after posting thier first winning league record 2013.
South Carolina State (15-4), winners of 12 of the last 14 MEAC women's tennis championships, returns to the finals with the win over NC Central. The top-seeded Lady Bulldogs will play the third-seeded Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University in the championship match on Saturday at 9 a.m.
Cnossen was named First Team All-MEAC on Tuesday and continued her strong play into the postseason, winning the first set of her top-flight singles match against junior Andjela Mihajlovic 6-1. Mihajlovic was trying to rally with a lead in the second set when the match was stopped after SCSU secured the team victory.
The Lady Bulldogs used a pair of 6-3 doubles wins for the first point of the day.
South Carolina State completed the victory with straight-set triumphs in the bottom third of its lineup. Freshman No. 4 Divya Murali topped junior
Sofia Miller (6-2, 6-1), sophomore No. 5 Zainab Bendahhou knocked off sophomore
Polina Sakharova (6-0, 6-2) and freshman No. 6 Chiara Carnelluti held off junior
Emily Pena (6-1, 6-3).
