DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina Central University senior sprinter
Bethany White won the women's 100-meter dash at the Duke Invitational for the third year in-a-row on Saturday, and did so in record-breaking fashion.
A native of Gaithersburg, Maryland, White shattered the meet record by posting a time of 11.45 seconds at this year's event, nearly two-tenths of a second less than the record she already held when she won the race in 2017 with a standard of 11.61.
On Saturday, White also joined teammates
Tyresha Alexander,
Erin Johnson and
Olivia Andrews to place fourth in a deep field of 23 competitors in the women's 4x100m relay. NCCU's season-best time of 46.40 was less than a second behind George Mason (46.26), Indiana Tech (46.20) and event winner East Carolina (45.47).
Other top performers for NCCU were sophomore
Bhrandi Crenshaw with a third-place finish in the women's triple jump (12.63m), sophomore
Gordon Lewis with a season-best time of 21.50 to place sixth in the men's 200m dash, and sophomore
Marvin Jones (6th, 2.02m) and junior
Omega Smalls (9th, 2.02m) in the men's high jump.
The NCCU men's 4x100m relay, made up of
Isaac Roberts,
Joshua Polk,
Blake Hartsfield and Lewis, also achieved a season-best time of 40.79 on Saturday to finish third, less than a half-second behind race winner Indiana Tech (40.43).
In other action during the weekend, four multi-event student-athletes participated at the New Captains Classic, hosted by Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia.
In the women's heptathlon, NCCU senior
Nateja Hale (2,667) and junior
Deja Stevenson (2,526) beat Zoe Stauffer of Christopher Newport (2,448) to finish first and second, respectively.
In the men's decathlon, NCCU seniors
James Johnson (3,181) and
Marcus Campbell (2,925) were the lone challengers in the event.
