NCCU Women’s Tennis Suffers First MEAC Loss

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Redshirt sophomore Frida Cnossen knocked off a 2018 All-MEAC honoree for North Carolina Central University in a narrow 4-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's tennis loss to Florida A&M University Saturday evening at the Bacon Park Tennis Club.

Sophomore Maru Berghaus and freshman Ivana Dragovic also got into the win column for the Lady Eagles.

NCCU split singles play, unable to rally from dropping all three doubles matches.

The Rattlers squeaked out the important first point in a trio of close matches, winning by just two points on courts one (7-5) and court two (6-4) while needing a tiebreaker to take court three (7-6).

Florida A&M picked up straight-set singles wins at No. 3 and No. 4 before junior Sophia Osabuohien outlasted NCCU sophomore Polina Sakharova in three sets for the decisive point. Osabohien rallied by a final score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Cnossen notched her top tier win against senior Mialiniania Rakotondrazafy. Cnossen (6-5) moved over .500 on the season with the 6-2, 6-4 conquest of the 2018 Second Team All-MEAC selection.

Dragovic (6-7) tallied her third straight win, disposing of sophomore No. 6 Adrienne Clayton 6-0, 6-3.

Berghaus (5-8) needed a tiebreaker to prevail at the second position in the Lady Eagles lineup, topping sophomore Haleigh Porter 6-3, 7-6 (1).

NC Central (5-9 Overall, 1-1 MEAC) will turn around and play Bethune-Cookman University at the same Bacon Park Tennis Club on Sunday at Noon.
