Lady Eagles Win Doubles in Road Loss to the 49ers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team picked up a pair of doubles wins to take an early lead before host Charlotte won four consecutive singles matches to rally for the 4-1 non-conference dual victory Friday afternoon in a contest that was moved indoors to Life Time Fitness' Onyx Premier Club.

The victorious tandems for the Lady Eagles were sophomore Frida Cnossen partnering with freshman Hannah Gaines and the junior duo of Sofia Miller and Emily Pena.

Cnossen/Gaines (4-5) won atop NCCU's lineup, securing a 6-3 triumph over senior Sasha Lee and junior Pierina Imparato. Mille/Pena (5-4) needed a little more work before setting for a 7-5 No. 3 doubles conquest of sophomore Gabriela Gonzalez and freshman Avery Watson.

The unfinished middle doubles showdown was tied 6-6 when the first team point was decided. Sophomore Maru Berghaus and freshman Ivana Dragovic were on that court for the maroon and gray.

Charlotte improved to 9-6 with its four straight-set singles wins. Imparato and Lee won by matching 6-2, 6-0 scores on courts two and three. Sophomore Emma Scott also lost just two games (6-1, 6-1) in her No. 4 win. Gonzalez also got in the win column at the sixth position in the 49ers lineup with a 6-4, 6-1 win.

The two unfinished matches were the closest battles with Cnossen trailing senior Tai Martin (6-3, 4-3) and sophomore Polina Sakharovia behind sophomore Zoe Radojicic.

NC Central (3-8) next hosts Morgan State University on Monday at Noon.
