HILTON HEAD, S.C. — North Carolina Central University freshmen
Christos Dagklis and
Thanos Spyropoulos both earned their first collegiate dual-match victories in Sunday 4-3 non-conference loss to IUPUI at the Van der Meer Tennis Center.
The neutral-site match was part of the two-week Hilton Head Spring TennisFest.
Senior
Gabriel Cucalon rallied from a first set loss to earn his second straight win. Cucalon knocked off Alex Jochim by a score of 1-6, 6-3, 10-1 in the final match of the morning.
Cucalon also won his doubles match, partnering with junior
Sebastian Bromley in the middle bout for a 6-1 triumph.
However, the Jaguars won the other two doubles tilts. A 7-6 win by Jochim and freshman Colton Morehart on court one over Dagklis and Spyropoulos was the decisive doubles battle that gave the initial point in favor of the Jags.
The Eagles rally in singles, including the wins by Dagklis and Spyropoulos at the third and fourth positions in NCCU's lineup. Dagklis downed Morehart 6-4, 6-3 and Spyropoulos was coasting 7-5, 4-1 when sophomore Ethan Mardanus-Budio retired.
IUPUI was able to improve to 8-4 on the season with three of their own singles wins. Senior No. 5 Bradley Luetschwager and sophomore No. 6 Eric Hollingsworth won in straight sets. The clinching point came off the racket of sophomore No. 2 Sean Bailey, who was able to fight past freshman
Amit Baran in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 6-2).
