HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Junior
Pablo Juez Torres collected his first singles win of the season in a 4-3 loss for the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team against George Mason University in the 2019 Hilton Head Spring TennisFest Wednesday afternoon.
The Patriots got a pair of three-set wins by sophomore No. 4 Ryan Charles and freshman No. 5 Erick Rivas to squeak past the Eagles.
George Mason improved to 3-7 on the season. NCCU (0-7) suffered its second straight 4-3 loss at Hilton Head.
Senior
Gabriel Cucalon leveled his singles record to 3-3 with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over junior Edward Ayers. Cucalon has won three straight matches, this time knocking off an All-Atlantic 10 honoree in Ayers.
Freshman
Christos Dagklis also got in the win column for a second straight time for the Eagles over spring break with his No. 3 conquest over senior Pally Ray. Dagklis won by a 6-1, 6-3 margin.
Juez Torres needed a little more work for his win, edging freshman Chanasorn Nakaurai by a tally of 7-6 (5), 1-6, 10-8.
George Mason swept doubles, earning the first important team point as the two teams split the singles points. The Patriots took the top two battles 6-2 and 6-3. In the closest doubles showdown, Rivas and junior Luke Maxwell knocked off Juez Torres and freshman
Amit Baran in a tiebreaker, 7-3, to win 7-6.
Junior No. 2 Jakob Nielson was the only GMU player to win in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). Charles held off freshman
Thanos Spyropoulos 6-4, 0-6, 10-3 and Rivas rallied past senior
Sebastian Bromley 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 to complete the win for the Patriots.
NC Central will conclude play in the Hilton Head Spring TennisFest against La Salle University on Friday at 1 p.m.
