NCCU Softball Drops Home Opening Twin Bill

CARY, N.C. — Sophomore Nadia Blevins went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases to highlight play for the North Carolina Central University softball team in a 3-2 nightcap loss to Western Carolina University on Tuesday afternoon at Thomas Brooks Park.

Senior Aleyah Evans and sophomore Olivia Daniel hit a pair of home runs in the fourth inning of the opener to give the Lady Eagles a lead midway through the opener, but the Catamounts were able to rally with four unearned runs in the sixth to steal the first game 6-3.

WCU moved over .500 on the season at 4-3 with the doubleheader sweep.

NCCU (2-8) will next play four games in the Pirate Invitational hosted by Hampton University over the weekend.

GAME ONE: Western Carolina 6, NC Central 3

A solo home run by Daniel followed by a two-run shot by Evans gave NCCU a 3-2 edge after four innings. Daniel put the Lady Eagles on the board with her blast that quickly flew over the left field fence. Junior Dalika Wallace drew a walk before Evans launched her go-ahead long ball to straightaway center.

The two home runs marked the second time in three days that Evans and Daniel hit home runs in the same inning as they both launched their first homers of the season in a 6-5 win over Robert Morris University.

Junior outfielder Erica Hayes provided the big bat for the Catamounts. Her two-run single in the top of the fourth gave the visitors the initial 2-nil lead. She then put Western Carolina ahead for good with a two-run double just inside the right field line. A pair of NCCU errors on the first two plays of the decisive sixth innings sparked the four-run unearned rally.

NCCU sophomore Kiara Hurley (2-5) only two earned runs in a tough complete-game loss. WCU junior Kinsey Liscio (2-0) only allowed one earned run in her winning effort. Both pitchers had four strikeouts over seven innings of work.

Daniel and sophomore Kaitlyn Macon each had two hits for the maroon and gray.

GAME TWO: Western Carolina 3, NC Central 2

Blevins ripped an RBI triple in the right field gap with one out in the bottom of the seventh to pull NCCU within one run. The speedy center fielder represented the potential tying run on third base, but sophomore pitcher Kayla Brewer was able to record the next two outs with a short groundout to herself where she looking Blevins back to third before throwing to first and then she got a game-ending fly out to left.

Blevins started the contest with singles in the third and fifth innings. She stole second both times to increase her team-high theft count to five. Sophomore Caroline Campbell drove in Blevins with a single up the middle for NCCU's first run in the fifth.

Senior Claire Eosso (0-2) had her best start of the season, but another unearned run in the sixth proved too costly as she suffered the loss after giving up just five hits and two earned runs seven innings.

Hayes continued to be the arch nemesis of the Lady Eagles as she had an RBI-groundout in the second and a sacrifice fly in the sixth to finish with six RBI on the day.

Blevins accounted for three of NCCU's five hits.

Brewer (1-1) fanned five on the way to her first win of the season.
