HAMPTON, Va. — Sophomore starter
Kiara Hurley picked up the win in a pair of wins for the North Carolina Central University softball team in the Pirate Invitational, downing Saint Peter's University 9-0 in five innings and topping host Hampton University 6-5 on Saturday.
Hurley (4-5) only allowed one earned run over 8 1/3 innings of work (0.81 ERA) as the Lady Eagles improved to 4-9 on the season. Sophomore
Olivia Daniel tallied five hits on the day while senior
Aleyah Evans drove in four runs.
NC Central will conclude play in the Pirate Invite on Sunday against Delaware State University (11 AM) and Hampton (3 PM).
GAME ONE: NC Central 9, Saint Peter's 0 (5 Innings)
Hurley only allowed one hit over five innings – a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth – and she recorded five strikeouts for her first shutout of the season.
The Lady Eagles exploded for nine runs on eight hits and four errors by the Peacocks.
Daniel and sophomore
Jacobia Johnson both collected a pair of hits for the maroon and gray.
Evans had the big bat for the Lady Eagles with a sac fly in the second and a bases-clearing, three-run triple in the fifth for a four RBI performance. Junior
Dalika Wallace started NCCU's scoring with an RBI double in the second and she scored twice.
GAME TWO: NC Central 6, Hampton 5
Hurley tossed the final 3 2/3 innings and just gave up one earned run on two hits over that span for her second win of the day.
NCCU jumped out to a 4-nil advantage in the first, but the Pirates scored four of their own in the third to knot the score. The early surge by the Lady Eagles included run-producing singles off the bats of Daniel, Wallace and sophomore
Nadia Blevins along with a sac fly by junior
Tamiera Sanchez.
A double to left by Wallace in the fifth put NCCU ahead for good in the fifth. An important insurance run was scored by junior pinch runner
Tehillah Duffy on a groundout by Sanchez as a pair of singles by Hampton in the home half of the half pulled the hosts within one run again. However, after that run scored Hurley retired the next seven Pirates in order to keep the Lady Eagles ahead.
Daniel finished with three singles. Wallace and Blevins each added two hits as NCCU outhit Hampton 9-6.
