BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Sophomore outside hitter
Da'Nesha Miller jumped in the North Carolina Central University starting lineup and delivered seven kills and eight digs to pace the Lady Eagles in a 3-0 loss to Wright State University in the Wolfpack-Camels Invitational on the campus of co-host Campbell University Saturday afternoon.
The Raiders returned to the win column after losing to the other co-host, North Carolina State University, on Friday with the 25-21, 25-21, 25-22 triumph over NCCU. Wright State improved to 6-2 on the season.
The Lady Eagles dropped their fifth straight match to slip to 1-7. NCCU returns home to host Charlotte on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
NCCU HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
Miller hit .273 in her first start of the season, well above the .078 hitting mark for NCCU on the day. Miller's seven kills and eight digs were season-high totals.
Freshman
Morgan Goodwin matched Miller with seven kills and her three block assists gave her a team-best 8.5 points. Fellow rookie
Arlanda Faulkner was just behind Goodwin with 8.0 points after recording five kills and match-high three aces.
Freshman setter
Celene Morris notched her third double-double with 25 assists and 12 digs. Senior libero
Erika Ianovale topped the Lady Eagles with 16 digs and junior
Jessica Pilivi added 11 digs. So
WRIGHT STATE HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
Sophomore Celia Powers led all players with eight kills and five block assists. Junior Taylor Gibson added seven spikes for a well-balanced attack by the Raiders. Freshman setter Lainey Stephenson had team-best totals of 20 assists and 16 digs.
SET-BY-SET:
1ST: A tight opener had the Lady Eagles leading as late as 16-15 on a Goodwin kill. Another spike by Faulkner leveled the score one last time at 17-all and a kill by sophomore
Da'Nesha Miller still had NCCU within one at 21-20 before the Raiders closed the set on a 4-1 run to win by four.
2ND: WSU grabbed a quick 4-1 edge and never relinquished it. The Lady Eagles committed as many errors as kills to thwart any comeback chances as the Raiders once again won by four points.
3RD: The Raiders looked in control with a 21-14 advantage before NCCU used a 6-1 rally featuring two aces by Faulkner to pull within two at 22-20. However, kills by a trio of Raiders sealed the three-point win and the sweep.
