EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – After an impressive showing during rookie minicamp, former North Carolina Central University defensive back Mike Jones signed an NFL contract with the New York Giants on Monday.
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Jones played three seasons at NCCU from 2013-16, earning multiple postseason honors as both a defensive back and a return specialist. He broke the NCCU record for career punt return average with 21.0 yards per punt return (31 punt returns, 651 yards, 2 touchdowns), and ended his standout career ranked ninth on NCCU's career passes defended list with 36 (25 pass break-ups, 11 interceptions) and tied for 13th with 11 career interceptions.
During his final campaign at NCCU in 2016, Jones was voted to All-MEAC First Team as both a defensive back and return specialist, and was announced as Sheridan Broadcasting Network (SBN) Black College All-American. He topped the MEAC with an average of 22.0 yards per punt return and was one of only four returners in the NCAA Division I-FCS with two punt return touchdowns. As a cornerback, Jones tallied 34 tackles and five passes defended with two interceptions and three pass break-ups.
As a sophomore in 2014, Jones earned All-MEAC First-Team honors as both a return specialist and defensive back, and was selected to All-America Teams by The Sports Network, Beyond Sports Network and BOXTOROW. He ranked second in the nation in punt returns, averaging 19.1 yards per return with a long of 60 yards, and averaged a team-best 22.3 yards per kickoff return. He led the MEAC and ranked sixth in the NCAA Division I-FCS with 18 passes defended, including five interceptions and 13 pass break-ups, while collecting 40 tackles (30 solo) with 2.5 hits for a loss.
After graduating from NCCU in December 2016, Jones played his final collegiate season at Temple University. In 2017, he started all 13 games and finished with 44 tackles (36 solo), two tackles for a loss, and one interception that he returned 43 yards versus Notre Dame.
