DURHAM, N.C. — Jamie Rogers concluded her collegiate career on a high note, winning the final match of the day to lift the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team to a 4-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division win over visiting South Carolina State University during NCCU's Senior Day Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Eagles started the day by honoring Rogers and
Lauren Mullis in a pre-match ceremony. They are both four-year letter winners for the maroon and gray.
NCCU finished its season at 2-16 overall after knocking off the Lady Bulldogs, who are the two-time defending MEAC champions and winners of 12 of the last 13 league tournaments. SCSU (4-8 Overall, 3-2 MEAC) needed to win to earn a three-way share for Southern Division regular season title. Instead, the Lady Bulldogs will enter the conference tourney as the No. 3 seed from the south. NCCU missed postseason play by one win.
Rogers rallied to win the decisive match in a three-set thriller, knocking off sophomore Anjela Mihajlovic in a showdown that took nearly two and a half hours. The Cary, North Carolina, product prevailed 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-4.
Rogers produced 27 singles wins in dual matches over her four years at NCCU.
In a symbolic passing of the guard, it was the two freshmen that set up the match victory for Rogers. No. 2
Maru Berghaus and No. 3
Polina Sakharova had successful finales to their rookie season to give NCCU a 3-1 lead.
Berghaus topped an All-MEAC performer in senior Andjela Vasic in straight-set scores of 6-4, 7-5. Sakharova bounced back from a disappointing first set to conquer freshman Aleksandra Sredojevic by a tally of 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.
The Eagles opened the day by securing the doubles point with wins on the first two courts. Rogers and Sakharova sealed the doubles win atop NCCU's lineup with a 6-4 triumph. Berghaus and sophomore
Sofia Miller picked up the first win at No. 2 by a 6-1 margin.
Rogers and Sakharova finished their season together with a .500 record of 7-7. Berghaus and Miller totaled three wins as partners.
Trailing 3-1, the Lady Bulldogs won the bottom two matches in straight sets to level the score to put more pressure on the marquee match that was won by Rogers.
The victory was the first for NCCU against SCSU since the Lady Eagles joined the MEAC in 2011-12.
