DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University junior
Bethany White has established herself as one of the top sprinters in the country, and in NCCU history.
On March 30, the Gaithersburg, Maryland, native won the women's 100-meters dash event at the distinguished Raleigh Relays with a career-best time of 11.41 seconds. That time currently ranks No. 1 in the MEAC, 15
th in the NCAA Division I East region, and is tied for 26
th among all NCAA Division I female sprinters.
"We are experiencing the maturation and growth of a phenomenal student. This student just happens to be
Bethany White the student-athlete," said White's proud coach Tavius "T.J." Walker, the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country at NCCU. "She has trusted in our process and embodies what this program is about."
White's blistering speed is something that has not been witnessed at NCCU in the past 20 years. Her time in the women's 100m dash at this season's Raleigh Relays is the fastest by an NCCU student-athlete since Elisha Marshall posted a mark of 11.15 seconds in 1998. Marshall went on the win the NCAA Division II women's 100m dash national championship that year.
"Bethany deserves to be ranked among the best and she now realizes that," said Walker. "She now believes that she is among our NCCU greats.
"I am proud of what she is doing, as it elevates our female student-athletes at NCCU and in our conference across the national track & field landscape. She is an academically-driven young lady who embodies what it means to be an Eagle."
As Walker points out, besides White's prowess on the track, she is an achiever in the classroom. The mass communication major boasts a 3.358 overall grade point average.
