DURHAM, N.C. – The Eagles continued their best start in the modern era of North Carolina Central University baseball with a convincing 12-2 victory over Iona College on Sunday to complete the three-game weekend series sweep of the Gaels at Durham Athletic Park.
NCCU (9-3) exploded for five runs in the second inning, and five more in the third to put the game away early.
Sophomore outfielder
Carter Williams hit 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, three RBI and a run scored to top the Eagles, while sophomore second baseman
Corey Joyce extended his team-best hitting streak to seven games by going 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored. Senior shortstop
Dominic Cuevas contributed a pair of hits with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored.
Starting pitcher
Jonathan Figueroa allowed just one run on four hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work to earn the victory, moving his record to 2-0 on the season.
NCCU returns to Durham Athletic Park on Tuesday (March 6) to host Longwood University at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
