DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University baseball sophomore Corey Joyce has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for February 2018 in recognition of his outstanding performance on the field and in the classroom.
 
Joyce batted .424 over the first month of the season with 14 hits, including three doubles and three home runs, to pace the Eagles to a 6-3 record. He boasted a .558 on base percentage and .788 slugging percentage over those nine games.
 
The Lexington, North Carolina, product was a big part of NCCU's series wins against Wagner College and New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).
 
Against the Seahawks, Joyce was 6-15 (.400) with three doubles, two home runs and seven RBI. The following weekend, Joyce was 5-8 (.625) with one home run, five runs scored and three RBI versus the Highlanders.
 
Joyce finished February with 10 RBI and 10 runs scored in nine starts. He also led the Eagles with seven stolen bases. The second baseman posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on 41 chances to start the year.
 
The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) named Joyce the league's player of the week on Feb. 19. He opened up the season with two home runs against Wagner and followed-up that performance with four hits in a doubleheader sweep of the Seahawks to win the award.
 
The business administration major maintains 3.549 cumulative grade point average (GPA) through three semesters at NCCU. Joyce is concentrating on marketing and wants to enter the MLB draft after graduating and become an entrepreneur.  
 
Joyce was enrolled in the NCCU Preparing to Soar program before his freshman season, a rookie campaign in which he was named Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American, MEAC Rookie of the Year, First Team All-MEAC, NCSSIA Second Team All-State, Black College Nines Large School First Team and MEAC Rookie of the Week twice.
