Seahawks Soar past Lady Eagles in Tennis Action Friday

DURHAM, N.C. — Senior Jamie Rogers notched her second straight win, but the UNC Wilmington women's tennis team won the other eight matches contested its first win of the season by topping host North Carolinas Central University, 6-1, on Friday afternoon.
 
The Seahawks set the tone of the match by surviving a couple of close doubles matches. The top two doubles teams from UNCW had to rally for 7-5 wins to earn the first team point.
 
Junior Sabrina Barisano and freshman Maddy Muller-Hughes trailed NCCU's top duo of Rogers and freshman Polina Sakharova, 4-3, before winning four of the next five games. Barisano and Muller-Hughes moved over .500 at 3-2 together.
 
Senior Xandra Fougner and sophomore Celeste Matute were one game away from losing to sophomore Sofia Miller and freshman Maru Berghaus before overcoming the 5-4 deficit by winning the next three games.
 
Straight-set wins from No. 2-4 in the Seahawks lineup by Muller-Hughes, Fougner and freshman Lea Dubois-Rebiere sealed the team victory. Senior Thai Thompson matched Muller-Hughes and Fougner with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 to increase the visitors lead to 5-0.
 
Rogers completed a comeback win atop the Lady Eagles lineup. After dropping a close tiebreaker in the first set, Rogers eventually knocked off Matute by a 6-7 (6), 6-4, 11-9 margin. Rogers has won both of her matches in the last three days in three-set affairs.
 
UNCW (1-7) completed its first victory of the season as freshman Rashika Ravindran held off sophomore Emily Pena in a tight 6-4, 6-3 battle.
 
NCCU (0-7) next plays at Elon University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
