SAVANNAH, Ga. — Freshman
Maru Berghaus picked up her first collegiate singles win in a dual match to highlight play for the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team in a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division losses to Bethune-Cookman University (L, 6-0) and Florida A&M University (L, 6-1) over the weekend at the Bacon Park Tennis Club.
NCCU remained winless on the season at 0-10 overall while starting league play at 0-2 after losing to the Wildcats on Friday and the Rattlers on Saturday in the two neutral-site showdowns.
Berghaus got in the win column with a No. 2 singles win in the FAMU match. The Cologne, Germany, native disposed of sophomore Karen Machisa by a 6-3, 6-2 margin.
The Rattlers won the other four singles matches contested in straight sets. Senior
Jamie Rogers had the next closest tilt for the Lady Eagles in a 6-3, 6-3 loss atop the lineup against junior Mialiniaina Rakotondrazafy.
Florida A&M won the top two doubles bouts, with freshmen Aylen Hubeaurt and Haleigh Porter narrowly edging Rogers and sophomore
Emily Pena, 7-5, on the second court.
A day earlier, the preseason favorites in the Southern Division dominated play from the second to fifth singles positions to complete the sweep. Both teams did not have an active player at No. 6 singles so the final score was 6-nil in favor of Bethune-Cookman.
Rogers once again found herself in a close affair in the marquee match. Rogers was knocked off 6-4, 7-5 to a reigning First Team All-MEAC honoree in senior Matea Roki.
Roki partnered with freshman Rehanna Butt for the closest doubles win for the Wildcats, which was a 6-3 triumph over Berghaus and sophomore
Sofia Miller.
NCCU returns home to host Appalachian State University on Sunday at 2 p.m.
