NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month: Paulina Afriyie


DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University women's basketball sophomore Paulina Afriyie has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for January 2018 in recognition of her outstanding performance on the court and in the classroom.
 
Afriyie nearly averaged a double-double in seven games during the first month of the New Year. She produced averages of 12.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, 1.3 steals and 1.0 assists in seven Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) battles.
 
The Bronx, New York, product completed double-doubles in wins against Delaware State University and Morgan State University. Afriyie totaled January game-high totals of 22 points and 15 rebounds against the DSU Hornets while adding three assists, three blocks and three steals to her double-double against the MSU Bears. Her 12 points and eight rebounds also helped NCCU secure a win over Coppin State University.
 
Afriyie scored in double digits on five occasions and pulled down double-digit rebounds a trio of times. The 5-foot-11 forward, who has ranked in the top-5 of the MEAC in rebounds per game and field goal percentage for most of the season, made 48.3-percent of her shot attempts for the month.
 
The conference named Afriyie MEAC Defensive Player of the Week on two consecutive weeks (Jan. 9 and Jan. 16).
 
The biology major maintains a 3.174 cumulative grade point average (GPA) through three semesters at NCCU. Afriyie has a pre-med concentration and wants to become a pharmacist after she graduates.
