NORFOLK, Va. — North Carolina Central University senior
Courtney Mirabella was selected the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Pitcher of the Week for her outstanding performance from Feb. 19-25, 2018, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Mirabella picked up a pair of complete-game victories in NCCU's doubleheader sweep of Howard University on Friday. She only allowed three hits over 12 innings of work while striking out 20 Bison.
The right-handed hurler was two outs away from throwing a no hitter in the opening 4-1 triumph before giving up a hit with one out in the top of the seventh. Mirabella fanned 13 batters, including four in the seventh, to settle for the one-hit gem.
Mirabella then tossed her first shutout of the season in an 8-0 conquest in the nightcap. She held Howard to two hits over her five innings of work while ringing up seven more K's.
The Bradenton, Florida, native leads NCCU with a 1.80 earned run average after posting a 0.58 ERA in the twin bill. Mirabella (2-3) has 49 strikeouts in 35 innings pitched and her 9.8 strikeouts per seven innings average is tops in the MEAC and ranks 22nd in NCAA Division I.
NCCU (2-6) next plays four games in the Red and Black Tournament hosted by Gardner-Webb University on Friday-Saturday, March 2-3 in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.
