Wildcats Serve Up Sweep of Lady Eagles


DURHAM, N.C. — Sophomore Christine Alcox blasted 10 kills for host North Carolina Central University in a 3-0 non-conference volleyball loss to Davidson College Tuesday afternoon in McDougald-McLendon Arena.
 
The Wildcats used 13 service aces and hit .247 on the attack to claim the 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 victory. Davidson (8-8 Overall) had to use a closing 9-2 run in the third set to complete the sweep and end a four match losing streak.
 
NC Central (4-13) next visits archrival North Carolina A&T State University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division clash on Friday at 6 p.m.  
 
NCCU HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
 
Alcox reached double-digit kills for the third time this season, and she was her most efficient yet. She tallied her 10 kills on just 13 swings without an error for a sizzling .769 hitting percentage. She also had five digs.
 
Freshman Arlanda Faulkner chipped in eight kills and senior Whitney White was the only other NCCU attacker with more than one kill as she finished with five spikes. White also had three solo blocks and one block assists for 8.5 total points.
 
Freshman setter Isis Mitchell had 20 assists and senior libero Erika Ianovale contributed 10 digs.
 
DAVIDSON HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
 
Senior setter Mason Rooney filled up the box score with seven kills, 19 assists, six aces, four digs and four block assists. Rooney led all players with 15 points.
 
Freshman Hattie Rodriguez topped the hot-hitting Wildcat offense with 13 kills. Senior Ciera Cockrell chipped in eight kills.
 
Davidson had 10 blocks with freshmen Alison Jennings and Lauryn Albold each participated in five of them. Jennings followed Rooney with four aces.
 
SET-BY-SET:
 
1ST: Davidson served up six aces in the opener, including four by Rooney. The visitors led by as many as 13 before setting for the nine-point win. Davidson hit .381 in the first set. NCCU's only lead was at 1-0 on a ball handling error call on the opening play.
 
2ND: The Wildcats scored the first five points and never trailed in another nine-point victory. Jennings served up two more Davidson in the opening surge. Rodriguez had six kills in the middle period while the Lady Eagles hit in the negative.
 
3RD: The Lady Eagles led for most of the third set in an attempt to extend the match. Alcox was a perfect 4 for 4 on kill attempts in helping NCCU construct a late 19-16 advantage before the Wildcats rallied. Davidson used four blocks on its closing 9-2 run, including on match point, to win by four. Senior Katharine Franz posted five of her six kills in the last set.
