DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University senior sprinter
Jonathan Williams has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for May 2017 in recognition of his outstanding performance on the track and in the classroom.
A native of Wake Forest, North Carolina, Williams advanced to the finals of the 200-meter dash at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a time of 21.50 seconds, then finished in seventh place in the finals. He also placed 13th in the 100m dash with a time of 10.66 seconds.
Williams joined teammates for the 4x100m relay, finishing one spot off the MEAC Championships medal podium in fourth place with a time of 40.91 seconds.
By virtue of the Eagles' historic 4x100m relay performance at the Penn Relays in late April, achieving the best event finish (second place) and time (40.26 seconds) at the prestigious event since 2008, NCCU qualified a relay team for the NCAA regionals for the first time since the university reclassified to Division I in the summer of 2011.
At the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary Championships in Lexington, Kentucky, the Eagles posted their second-fastest 4x100m relay time of the season at 40.40 seconds to place 21st.
An exercise sport science major at NCCU, Williams boasts a 3.32 overall grade point average and is on track to graduate with a bachelor's degree in December. His plans include graduate school with his eyes set on earning a doctorate in physical therapy.
