DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University baseball junior pitcher
Devin Sweet has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for April 2017 in recognition of his outstanding performance on the field and in the classroom.
A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Sweet made five starts on the mound in April, resulting in two victories and an earned run average of 2.64. In 30.2 innings of work, he recorded 28 strikeouts and held opponents to a .232 batting average.
Sweet opened the month by tossing six scoreless innings in a shutout win over Florida A&M, allowing just three hits and striking out five Rattlers. He contained Bethune-Cookman to only two runs with six strikeouts in his 7.2 innings of action against the Wildcats, settling for a no-decision in the Eagles' 10-2 triumph. Sweet closed April in similar fashion to the way he started the month, throwing six scoreless innings and surrendering just three hits with seven strikeouts in an 11-2 victory over Savannah State.
The mathematics major has achieved a 3.442 grade point average at NCCU, and is on track to earn his bachelor's degree in May 2018. He is planning to attend graduate school for a master's degree in mathematics, and then pursue a management career.
During NCCU Honors Convocation on April 6, Sweet received the William Gaston Pearson Award for Academic Excellence in Mathematical Sciences. He was also recognized as a Chancellor's Scholar and a member of the University Honors Program.
