NCCU Clinches Postseason Bid with Saturday Split

CARY, N.C. – A 3-0 win by North Carolina Central University in its series opener against rival North Carolina A&T State University secured a spot in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship for the first time in program history since joining the league in 2012 on Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies avoided the sweep with an 8-0 win in Saturday's second game at Thomas Brooks Park.

NCCU (11-27 Overall, 6-7 MEAC) and NCAT (15-28-1, 7-7) will play the rubber game on Sunday at Noon. The winner will most likely be the third seed from the Southern Division while the loser will be the fourth seed.

NCCU recognized pitcher/designated player Dominique Wilson, first baseman/designated player Brianna Hampton, second baseman/pitcher Jennifer Allison, catcher Kim Mobley and outfielder Charity Best before Saturday's first game.

The Lady Eagles gave Wilson run support early with a pair of runs in the second. Freshman Ava Dolan led off with a single and Allison drew an ensuing walk. They both scored, including Allison on a single by freshman Dalika Wallace.

Waddell, who as tagged with the loss in the opener, settled down and held NCCU to just two hits over the first four innings of the nightcap. Waddell (9-13) retired the first eight Lady Eagles she faced and tallied four strikeouts in the combined shutout.

North Carolina A&T outhit NCCU, 12-2, on its way to the run-rule victory. The Aggies scored four times in both the first and fourth innings. A three-run homer by sophomore Mohagony Headen capped the visitors early run production while a two-run single by senior Kimberly Brunson finished off the late scoring barrage. Freshman Alyssa Green paced the Aggies with three hits.
