Vashion Johnson to Participate in Marine Corps Workshop

QUANTICO, Va. – North Carolina Central University head softball coach Vashion Johnson has been nominated and will participate in the 2017 Coaches Workshop at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, which provides coaches from all different collegiate sports with additional tools to develop a culture of leadership within their teams, from May 17-20.

The purpose of the Marine Corps Coaches Workshop is to provide selected coaches an opportunity to learn how Marine Officers are recruited, screened and developed into leaders. The workshop also assists coaches in gaining an understanding of Marine Corps' leadership traits, principles and small unit leadership; something they can take back with them in order to foster a cultural of leadership among their student-athletes.

More than 20 college and university coaches from across the United States participate in the annual workshop. During their time on base, the participates were able to see the process of commissioning of training Marine Officers while interacting with officer instructors.

Johnson, who served with the U.S. Marines and is a Desert Storm veteran, will be involved in numerous events over the four-day workshop. Activities will include motivational morning workouts; a leadership reaction course (a training course used to help evaluate candidate decision-making, leadership and fellowship skills); a martial arts demonstration (aimed to help character and discipline development); and instructions on fire team fundamentals, lifesaving steps and simulated combat patrol. The summit will also have lectures on leadership traits and ethics, a parade and a visit to Marine Corps Museum before a presentation of certificate of completion by the Commanding General.
