SAVANNAH, Ga. – Back-to-back home runs by freshman
Ava Dolan and senior
Kim Mobley propelled the North Carolina Central University softball team to a 4-3 victory in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division series finale at Savannah State University on Sunday.
Senior starter
Dominique Wilson held the Lady Tigers without an earned run over the first six innings. She tossed 18 consecutive innings in the series and earned the win in all three contests. Wilson (7-11), who had three strikeouts on Sunday, finished the weekend with a 0.39 ERA by allowing just one earned run over her 18 innings of work.
NCCU improved to 8-22 overall while leveling its league ledger at .500. The series sweep marked the first time the Lady Eagles have swept a MEAC Southern Division opponent since joining the conference in 2012.
Savannah State (0-27, 0-6) scored an unearned run in the first and remained ahead until the top of the fifth. The Lady Eagles finally broke through on senior starter Amanda McDowell (0-11), who recorded seven of her nine strikeouts over the first four innings. Senior second baseman
Jennifer Allison led off the frame with an infield single, which led to pinch runner
Zakiya Smith eventually scoring the equalizer on a sacrifice fly by freshman
Dalika Wallace.
The maroon and gray grabbed the lead for good with their seventh and eighth home runs of the series in the sixth. After Wilson drew a leadoff walk, Dolan drilled her go-ahead, two-run blast to left center, which was her second of the series and third of her rookie campaign. Mobley followed with an important solo shot down the left field line as her first home run at NCCU proved to be the game-winning run.
The Lady Tigers eighth and final hit in the seventh off the bat of junior Brianna Harris scored the hosts third run to pull within one. With the potential game-tying and game-winning runs on base, NCCU junior reliever
Lauren Sitterson ended the contest by getting Savannah State to hit into a groundout for her first save.
Sitterson had two of NCCU's five hits with a leadoff single in the first and a double in the third, but she was stranded on third base both times. Sophomore
Aleyah Evans stole her team-high sixth base.
NCCU will next host Norfolk State University in a rescheduled doubleheader on Wednesday, April 5 at 1 p.m.
