NCCU Posts Grand Sweep of Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Seniors Jennifer Allison and Dominique Wilson both drilled grand slams to highlight a 21-run day for the Lady Eagles as the North Carolina Central University softball team took both ends of Saturday's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division showdown at Savannah State University by scores of 7-0 and 14-1.

NCCU smashed six home runs to improve to 7-22 overall and 2-3 in the league. It marks the first time the Lady Eagles have won a conference series against Savannah State since joining the MEAC in 2012. The Lady Tigers remained winless on the season at 0-26 and 0-5.

The two squads will conclude the three-game set with a single game on Sunday at Noon.

GAME ONE: N.C. Central 7, Savannah State 0

Wilson tossed a complete-game shutout and helped her own cause with a three-run homer to lead the Lady Eagles to the seven-run victory. Wilson hurled her second shutout with seven strikeouts.

Junior designated player Lauren Siitterson had a big game in her first contest moved up to the leadoff position. She started the contest with a solo home run to straightaway center. It was the first long ball for the junior college transfer. Sitterson finished the contest with two hits and two RBI.

NCCU's big inning came in the fourth. The Lady Eagles plated three runs to pull out to a four-run lead. Senior catcher Kim Mobley led off with a double and later scored on a sac fly by Allison. Sophomore outfielder Aleyah Evans singled and scored on a wild pitch. Junior Fallon Roberson added a walk and pinch runner Zakiya Smith later scored that run on an RBI-groundout by Sitterson.

The visitors outhit the Lady Tigers, 8-5, with seven different Lady Eagles' collecting base knocks.

Savannah State left 10 runner on base, which included Lady Tigers in scoring position in five different innings. However, Wilson escaped each time. She ended three of those frames with strikeouts.

GAME TWO: N.C. Central 14, Savannah State 1 (5 Innings)

Allison and Wilson launched their grand slams in the night cap as NCCU rolled to the run-rule victory.

Wilson doubled-up her team-high RBI total from seven to 14, which included her second home run of the day. She now has four homers on the season. Wilson also tossed the second game and allowed just one run and struck out four more Lady Tigers to secure her second win of the day and improve to 6-11 on the year.

Savannah State actually held the initial lead after Alexis Singleton hit a leadoff triple in the first and scored on a groundout by Elizabeth Humes.

Freshman third baseman Ava Dolan knotted the score with a leadoff homer to start a four-run second inning. Dolan has two round-trippers on the season.

Allison's grand slam – her first home run in two seasons at NCCU – extended the Lady Eagles' advantage to 8-1 in the third.

NCCU finished off the big day with six-run fifth, which featured Wilson's grand slam and a solo shot by Evans; her first of the year.

Other highlights of NCCU's offensive surge included RBI walks drawn by Roberson and sophomore Erykah Smith. Allison scored three times and joined Wilson with two hits apiece in the second game.

Six of NCCU's eight hits in the contest were of the extra-base variety. Freshman Dalika Wallace's first collegiate hit was a double in the fifth.
