DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University softball sophomore outfielder
Miriam Duen has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for February 2017 in recognition of her outstanding performance in the classroom and on the diamond.
A native of Murrieta, California, Duen paced the Lady Eagles with 12 hits and a .387 batting average in the first month of the fastpitch season. In 13 starts, she recorded four doubles, three runs, three RBI and one stolen base while sporting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
The 5-6 switch-hitting right fielder produced base hits in eight different games, including four multi-hit performances. In a doubleheader at Gardner-Webb on Feb. 23, Duen totaled three hits with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.
Duen is a criminal justice major and boasts a 3.75 overall grade point average after three semesters at NCCU, including a perfect 4.00 GPA in the fall of 2016. She is concentrating on homeland security and is also pursuing a minor in Spanish.
The President of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is involved in numerous organizations on campus. Duen is the secretary and acting vice president of NCCU's SAAC, and participates with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Campus Ministry, Eagle Ambassadors, Chancellors Leadership Council, Preparing to Soar Program mentor and Sodexo Student Council.
Duen plans to graduate early, but then stay at NCCU to attend graduate school and intern for a government agency. She wants to become a Federal Criminal Investigative Detective for the FBI and work either internationally, back home in California or at the FBI headquarters in Quantico, Virginia. Duen eventually wants to earn another degree in business and marketing so she can open her own business after she retires.
