Dragons Hold NCCU to Four Hits in Doubleheader Sweep

CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team was defeated 5-2 and 9-0 in a non-conference doubleheader to Drexel University at Thomas Brooks Park Tuesday afternoon.

NCCU (5-22 Overall) returns to Mid-Eastern Athletics Conference (MEAC) Southern Division play with a three-game series at Savannah State University over the weekend. The Lady Eagles and Lady Tigers will start the set with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and conclude with a single game on Sunday at Noon.

GAME ONE: Drexel 5, N.C. Central 2

Junior starting pitcher Lauren Sitterson helped her own cause with a two-run single in the fourth, but five NCCU errors led to four unearned runs for the visitors as Drexel won by three.

Sitterson had two of the Lady Eagles' four hits.

Senior Jennifer Allison and junior Ryann Kostandin had the other NCCU hits as junior leftie Katie Haley held the hosts to just four singles. Haley (1-4) earned her first win of the season, going all seven innings with seven strikeouts.

Drexel outhit NCCU by six (10-4) with sophomore outfielder Jenelle Ladrido leading the way with three hits, including a double and an RBI-single in the second that started the scoring for the Dragons.

Sitterson (1-6) took the loss, despite four of her five runs allowed being unearned over the first four frames.

GAME TWO: Drexel 9, N.C. Central 0

Freshman Devon Grippe tossed a no-hitter in the nightcap to complete the sweep for the Dragons. Grippe (2-2) used seven strikeouts and only faced two batters over the minimum in recording her hitless gem.

Senior pitcher Dominique Wilson was NCCU's lone base runner. She reached on a fielding error by the Drexel shortstop in the second and she drew a walk in the only Lady Eagles' walk in the fourth.

Grippe got plenty of run support as the visitor's plated nine runs on 12 hits to record the run-rule victory in six innings. Sophomore Taylor M. Lee and senior Savanna Johnson recorded three hits apiece for the Dragons. Johnson had the big hit with a three-run triple in the sixth. Lee hit a solo homer in the second, drilled a one-run double in the third and singles in the fifth.

Drexel improved to 6-10 overall with the sweep.
