PREVIEW: #NCCUSB Hosts Drexel Tuesday


DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central concludes a stretch of nine games in eight days by hosting Drexel University in a non-conference doubleheader at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, North Carolina, on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m.
 
NCCU will be providing a free audio webcast of the twin bill with NCCU Sports Network broadcaster Mike Wood on the air with the play-by-play along with live stats. Fans can follow NCCU softball all season by visiting NCCUEaglePride.com and on social media at Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The Lady Eagles opened up Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division play with a three-game series at Florida A&M University over the weekend. The three-time defending MEAC champion Rattlers won all three games of the series by scores of 5-0, 2-1 and 7-0. NCCU (5-20 Overall) is 3-1 at home.
 
The maroon and gray is batting .203 as a team with just six players holding averages above that mark. Sophomore outfielder Miriam Duen paces the group with a .297 average, which includes four doubles. Senior pitcher/designated player Dominique Wilson follows with a .262 average and team-best totals of two home runs and seven RBI. Rounding out the group is senior pitcher/first baseman Jennifer Allison (.220), sophomore outfielder Aleyah Evans (.219, 3 2B), freshman third baseman Ava Dolan (.218, 1 HR 6 R) and senior catcher Kim Mobley (.203, 4 2B, 4 RBI, 6 R).
 
NCCU has used three pitchers this season with Wilson seeing most of the action in the circle. Wilson is 4-19 with a 4.46 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 75.1 innings pitched. Junior Lauren Sitterson, who has recently increased her average up to .278 in limited at bats, is 1-5 with a 6.95 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 45.1 innings. Allison rounds out the trio with a 0-5 record and 9.15 ERA in 26.0 innings pitched. 
 
NCCU hosted Drexel last season as well, with the Dragon edging the Lady Eagles in the single game by a 7-6 margin.

The Dragons have lost their last four games, including a three-game set at UNC Wilmington over the weekend to begin Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) competition. Drexel (4-10 Overall) has played all of its games on the road this season and is 2-0 against institutions from the MEAC, sweeping Howard University to start the year.
 
A pair of freshman highlight play for the Dragons as outfielder Taylor Kent and corner infielder Linda Rush have matching .357 averages. Kent tops the club with 11 runs scored and six stolen bases. Rush is the power leader with five doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI. Senior Vanessa Lightfoot joins Rush as the only other Drexel player to start all 14 games and she is batting .225 with eight runs scored.
 
Senior Tara Konopka, who led the Dragons with 10 wins last season, has three of Drexel's four wins this campaign. Konopka is 3-4 with a 3.35 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 39.2 innings. Junior leftie Katie Haley (0-4) does not have a win on the season, but she has a solid 3.50 ERA in 28.0 innings pitched.
