NCCU Splits First Two at Liberty Classic Friday

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The North Carolina Central University softball team bounced back from being run-ruled 10-1 in its morning game against Saint Francis (Pa.) University by posting a 5-0 shutout victory over University of Rhode Island in the afternoon session of the Liberty Classic Friday.

The Eagles, who finished the day at 3-14 overall, will conclude play in the Liberty Classic with one game on Saturday against the host Flames with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.

FIRST GAME: Saint Francis 10, N.C. Central 1 (5 Innings)

The Red Flash continued to play well, winning its seventh straight game, after collecting 13 hits and holding NCCU to just three base knocks.

Sophomore Cheyenne McKee highlighted play for the victors, going 4-for-4 from the leadoff position with a three-run homer, a double and four runs scored. Junior Jordan Seneca launched her own three-run blast in the fifth to walk-off the nine-run victory.

Saint Francis improved to 19-8 overall with its second win over the Lady Eagles. The two squad's met to start the season on Feb. 10 with the Red Flash prevailing 6-0.

Sophomore Miriam Duen led off the game with a single and she stole second, but NCCU was held hitless over its next 14 at bats.

However, two consecutive doubles to start the top of the fifth prevented a second SFU shutout over the Lady Eagles. Freshman Ava Dolan hit her two-bagger to center and she came around to score on an ensuing double to right by junior Fallon Roberson.

SECOND GAME: N.C. Central 5, Rhode Island 0

Senior Dominique Wilson tossed NCCU's first shutout of the season. Wilson (3-7) earned her second straight win by only allowing three hits over seven innings of work. She also fanned six Rams.

Offensively, NCCU scored its five runs on five hits, three walks and five URI errors.

Sophomore Aleyah Evans paced the Lady Eagles with a single, double, walk and a stolen base. Evans singled and scored the opening run in the second and her RBI-double capped a three-run third.

The maroon and gray swiped five total bases, including two by senior Kim Mobley and one apiece by sophomore Danyelle Noland and freshman Dalika Wallace. Noland walked an eventually scored NCCU's final run in the fourth. Senior Jennifer Allison also collected an extra-base hit with a double while Mobley added an RBI.

Rhode Island (1-12) had runners in scoring position in three different innings, but Wilson wiggled out of each jam as the Rams stranded seven total runners in being blanked for a fourth time this season.
