NCCU Battles Hard in Senior Day Showdown against League Champs

DURHAM, N.C. – Senior guard Morgan Jones scored a game-high 20 points on her Senior Day, but the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team lost to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season champions Bethune-Cookman University, 62-52, in McDougald-McLendon Arena Saturday afternoon.

Jones and fellow senior guards Monique Whaley-Briggs and Chantal Thomas were honored before the contest.

Bethune-Cookman (17-9 Overall, 13-1 MEAC) doubled-up the Lady Eagles, 18-9, in the second quarter to squeak out its eighth straight win in an otherwise close battle. The Wildcats entered the day having at least a share of the regular-season title, but the victory clinched sole possession for BCU for a second straight season.

Jones netted 16 of her 20 points in the second half to pull within 18 points of scoring 1,000 career points. She also tallied three assists and three steals.

After a level first quarter where both squads scored 16 points, the Wildcats used a decisive 8-0 run late in the second quarter to pull out to a 34-25 halftime advantage.

The visitors stayed in front throughout the second half, but six consecutive points by Jones did pull the Lady Eagles within one possession, 38-35, at the 4:48 mark of the third quarter. However, BCU scored the next nine points to extend its edge back to double digits. The Wildcats stayed in front by at least 10 points throughout the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Kendra Cooper scored a team-high 13 points for the victors, including a trio of treys. Eight total Wildcats scored and senior center Kailyn Williams flirted with a double-double by scoring eight points and grabbing a team-high nine rebounds.

Sophomore Rodneysha Martin and freshman Jada Blow each chipped in nine points for the maroon and gray. Blow also nailed three 3-pointers. Freshman Paulina Afriyie had a strong game with six points and team-high marks of eight rebounds and four blocks.

NCCU (6-20 Overall, 5-9 MEAC) will play its final home game of the season against MEAC foe Savannah State University on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
