NCCU Softball Falls to Mount St. Mary’s and Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Sophomore outfielder Miriam Duen poked three hits to lead the North Carolina Central University softball team in a pair of losses at the Winthrop/Adidas Tournament at Terry Field Saturday.

The Lady Eagles were run-ruled in both contests, dropping the first game 14-1 to Mount St. Mary's College and 9-1 to host Winthrop University.

NCCU (1-11) will play its fifth and final game in the Winthrop/Adidas Tournament on Sunday at Noon against East Tennessee State University.

FIRST GAME: Mount St. Mary's 14, N.C. Central 1

The Mountaineers scored six runs in its first two innings to grab the early lead and then pulled away with an eight-run fifth inning.

NCCU picked up its lone run in third on a sacrifice fly by senior starting pitcher Dominique Wilson. Junior shortstop Ryann Kostandin led off with a single, stole second and moved over to third on a single by senior catcher Kim Mobley before tagging up on Wilson's flyout.

Duen had a pair of hits in her only two at bats, poking a single in the second and ripping a double in the right-field gap in the fourth.

Mount St. Mary's (1-0) scored 14 runs on just 10 hits in its first game of the season. The Mounts drew 11 walks and were hit by two pitches to account for 13 extra base runners. Sophomore Morgan Alisauckas led the victors with four RBI, including a three-run homer in the big fifth inning.

SECOND GAME: Winthrop 9, N.C. Central 1

NCCU held a 1-0 lead midway through the third inning before the Winthrop Eagles scored seven runs in the home half of the third to take control. They added two more runs in the home half of the fourth to ended NCCU's day with just 10 innings played over two games.

Duen drove in NCCU's run with a single in the third. Kostandin scored for the second time on the day as she started the two-out rally for the maroon and gray with a triple to right-center field.

Mobley followed with her second hit of the day, but a pick-off ended the rally. Junior Fallon Roberson had the first of NCCU's four hits with a leadoff single in the second.

Winthrop cleared the bases in a bases loaded situation twice in the second inning. Sophomore center fielder Morgan Lowers did it the first time with a three-run double while junior Madison Templeton had the second three-RBI hit. Lowers finished with four RBI.
