ETSU Blanks NCCU Softball in Winthrop/Adidas Finale

ROCK HILL, N.C. – A one-out single to center by sophomore Janeen Reynolds prevented the North Carolina Central University softball team from being no-hit in an 11-0 loss to East Tennessee State University at the Winthrop/Adidas Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

The Bucs scored an unearned run in the first before pulling away with six runs in the second. ETSU (8-7) added four more runs in the fifth for the run-rule victory.

Senior first baseman Taylor Carter led the victors with five RBI, which featured a two-run home run in the second and a three-run shot in the fourth.

The Lady Eagles had their best chance in the first when they loaded the bases on three walks off Bucs junior starter Madison Ogle in the first inning. Junior Ryann Kostandin, senior Dominique Wilson and senior Jennifer Allison drew the base on balls, but Ogle got a groundout to end the NCCU threat.

Freshman Kelly Schmidt tossed the final four innings to earn the win. Schmidt (1-1) earned her first collegiate win by only allowing the one hit to Reynolds just two outs shy of the combined no hitter. She finished with six strikeouts.

The Lady Eagles used all three of their pitchers, with junior starter Lauren Sitterson (0-3) taking the loss.

NCCU (1-12) will make its home debut at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, North Carolina, against fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Hampton University on Monday, March 6 in a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m.
