DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University women's basketball junior
Rodneysha Martin has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for November 2017 in recognition of her outstanding performance on the court and in the classroom.
The guard averaged 14.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game in NCCU's first five games of the season. The Eagles picked up home wins over Longwood University and Johnson & Wales University over that stretch.
In the Eagles season-opening win over the Lancers, Martin poured in 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.
Martin has been ranked the top free throw shooter in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and in the top-five of the league in scoring throughout non-conference play. She shot 86.4-percent from the charity stripe in the first month of the season (19-22).
The Olive Branch, Mississippi, product scored in double digits in NCCU's first four games to take over as the Eagles top scorer after she averaged 5.7 points per game as a sophomore.
Martin is a co-captain and the only maroon and gray player to start every game so far this season.
The biology major boasts a 3.76 cumulative grade point average (GPA) midway through her junior season. Martin is a MEAC All-Academic Team honoree who participates in the NCCU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and NCCU Science African American Majors Evolving (SAAME). She plans to attend medical school after NCCU to eventually practice as an OB-GYN.
