Phillips Became NCCU's DI Era Career Assists Leader in October


DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University volleyball senior Paige Phillips has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for October 2017 in recognition of her outstanding performance on the court and in the classroom.
 
The setter broke the NCCU NCAA Division I era record for total career assists in October. Her 1,896 career assists in 102 matches rank fourth most all-time at NCCU (including DII era before 2007).
 
Phillips averaged 7.96 assists and 2.68 digs per set in eight October matches as the Lady Eagles posted a .500 league record over that span.
 
The Birmingham, Alabama, product recorded season-high marks of 43 assists and 16 digs in a 3-1 home win against Savannah State University. The big performance was one of her six double-doubles on the season.
 
Phillips finished her senior season ranking fifth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) with 7.65 assists per set after increasing her averages to 8.54 assists and 2.77 digs per set. Her strong play in six conference matches in October helped NCCU secure its second straight postseason appearance in the MEAC Volleyball Championships.
 
Phillips is a biology major with a pre-med concentration, who currently maintains a 3.14 cumulative grade point average (GPA) after boasting a 3.62 GPA in the spring 2017 academic semester. Phillips is a three-time MEAC All-Academic Team honoree who plans attend graduate school after NCCU and earn her master's in biological and biomedical sciences.
