GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina Central University men's and women's teams combined for five medals at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which concluded Saturday, May 7 at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
The five medals – all bronze – were captured by freshman
Bethany White (Gaithersburg, Md.) in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.74 seconds, junior
Zoe Ellis (Charlotte, N.C.) in the triple jump with a leap of 12.28 meters, senior
Kevin Vincent (Cary, N.C.) in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.53, the women's 4x100-meter relay (
Markiara Staten,
Bethany White,
Santese Pryor,
Christa Landy) with a time of 45.88, and the men's 4x100m relay (
Joshua McClam,
Deontae Williams,
Jonathan Williams,
Isaac Roberts) with a time of 40.42.
The NCCU men celebrated their best finish at the conference outdoor championship since rejoining the MEAC in the 2011-12 season. The Eagles placed ninth with 38 points, which is more than the NCCU men's teams have scored in the last three years combined. (14 points in 2015, 3 points in 2014, 19 points in 2013)
Besides the bronze medalists, the Eagles received points from
Carlton Edwards, Jr. in the 400m hurdles (4th, 53.90); the 4x400m relay of
James Johnson,
Deandre James, Edwards and Vincent (4th, 3:11.95);
Mykol Branch (4th, 1.94m) and
Armond Shaw (5th, 1.91m) in the high jump;
Joshua McClam (6th, 7.36m) in the long jump; Timothy Edelen (8th, 47.67m) in the javelin throw, and
Christian Obame in the discus throw (7th, 41.11m) and shot put (8th, 13.70m).
The NCCU women tied for 10th place with 22 points, both improvements from last year's outdoor finish of 11th place with 20 points.
Ellis contributed points for the Lady Eagles with a fifth-place effort in the long jump (5.64m).
