DURHAM, N.C. – Florida A&M University had a dozen more hits than host North Carolina Central University on the day as the Rattlers won both ends of Saturday's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) softball doubleheader, 10-1 (5) and 7-4, at Parkwood Athletic Field.
FAMU (14-19 Overall, 3-0 MEAC) – the two-time reigning conference tournament champions – finished with a 19-7 hit advantage to complete the three-game series sweep. The Lady Eagles committed seven errors on the day that led to seven unearned runs.
NCCU (3-28, 0-3) returns to action next weekend in another home MEAC series against Savannah State University.
GAME ONE: Florida A&M 10, N.C. Central 1 (5 innings) A solo home run by senior second baseman
Jenny Tracy broke up the Rattlers shutout bid in the fourth but sophomore starting pitcher Veronica Burse was provided ample run support as FAMU tallied 10 runs on 11 hits, four walks and two plunked batters.
Burse (4-8) only allowed four hits over her five innings of work to earn the win. She struck out four and did not issue a walk.
Junior first baseman Miesha McBride showcased a big bat in the cleanup position for the Rattlers, driving in four runs with a two-run double in the first and a two-run single in the fourth.
Tracy throttled a quick laser of a home run over the left field fence for her team-high third blast. Tracy's homer was the Lady Eagles only extra base hit. Freshman
Aleyah Evans was 2 for 2 with a pair of infield base hits.
Senior
London Booker (2-11), who accounted for NCCU's other hit, took the loss in the pitcher's circle lasting 3 2/3 innings.
GAME TWO: Florida A&M 7, N.C. Central 4 The Lady Eagles held a 3-1 edge after four innings before the Rattlers slithered ahead with six runs in the top of the fifth. The decisive frame included a grand slam off the bat of senior designated player Raven Moseley.
Four NCCU errors proved costly in the three-run loss as the mistakes led to five unearned runs for FAMU.
After the Rattlers got on the board first with one run in the top of the third, the Lady Eagles soared ahead with three of their own runs in the home half of the inning. Freshman
Janeen Reynolds drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on an RBI-groundout by sophomore
Danyelle Noland. Freshman
Miriam Duen reached with a bunt single and later scored on a sac fly by Tracy. Senior
Markell Wylie, who reached on an error, scored the third run – her team-high 17th time touching home plate – on a single by senior
Casey Hargett.
NCCU was held without a hit over the last four innings. Junior Kenya Pereira, who was the winning pitcher Friday, tossed the final three innings to earn a save for FAMU. Freshman Tahlia Snider (1-1) garnered her first collegiate win, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits in four innings of action with four strikeouts.
Wilson singled in the second and also scored NCCU's final run in the sixth. In that frame, Wilson reached on a dropped fly ball and later trotted home on a wild pitch.
