ATLANTA, Ga. – Junior designated player
Dominique Wilson provided North Carolina Central University with a pair of one-run leads but host Georgia Tech scored the game's final two runs to prevail 3-2 in non-conference softball action at Shirley Clements Mewborn Field Monday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 6-14 overall. The Lady Eagles were unable to build upon their first win of the season to slip to 1-19. The two teams will meet again for another single game on Tuesday at 5 p.m. that was just scheduled after NCCU's doubleheader at Alabama A&M University was cancelled due to wet field conditions in Huntsville.
Sophomore starter Emily Anderson held NCCU to just three hits while striking out a career-high 14 batters in the complete-game victory.
However, two of those hits were RBI singles to Wilson in the first and third innings to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 and 2-1 advantage, respectively. Wilson knocked senior
Markell Wylie in the first with a bloop single to right and then ripped a hard shot off the base of the right field wall to plate sophomore
Danyelle Noland in the third. Wylie and Noland both reached base by drawing walks.
Georgia Tech leveled the score for the first time in the bottom of the first with an unearned run as NCCU committed its first of three errors. The Jackets answered again in the fourth with a run on two singles and two stolen bases. A pair of base knocks followed by an RBI groundout by Katie Krzus accounted for the hosts' go-ahead run in the fifth.
Anderson (5-9) only allowed one run over her final four innings and ended her strong performance by striking out the side in the seventh.
Junior
Jennifer Allison and senior
London Booker gave the Lady Eagles a great chance from the pitcher's circle. Allison (0-8) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits while fanning three over 4-plus innings of work. Booker got the final six outs without giving up a run.
Junior
Jenny Tracy accounted for NCCU's final hit with a leadoff single in the sixth but the runner was eliminated from the base paths on a double play.
