NCCU Wins Seven Events at UNCW Seahawk Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's and women's track and field teams opened the outdoor season in style by combining for seven event victories during the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 11-12.
 
The NCCU women tallied four wins, while the men chalked up three in an invitational field that included teams from Campbell, College of Charleston, UNC Greensboro, Howard, Lynchburg, Francis Marion, Guilford, St. Andrews and host UNC Wilmington.
 
Junior Santese Pryor had a standout performance, winning the women's 200-meter dash by one-one thousandths of a second in a time of 25.451 seconds, then joining Markiara Staten, Bethany White and Miaysha Bryant to celebrate a victory in the 4x100m relay with a mark of 47.02 seconds. Pryor also ran in the 4x400m relay with Jaleesa Smoot, Christa Landy and Kiana Seabrook to place second in 3:52.64.
 
White crossed the finish line in 12.04 seconds to win the women's 100m dash, followed closely behind by Staten in second place at 12.08.
 
Smoot (56.80), Seabrook (56.87) and Landy (57.05) captured second through fourth places in the women's 400m dash.
 
MEAC indoor triple jump gold medalist Zoe Ellis kept her momentum going by winning the triple jump with a leap of 12.43 meters, while also placing fourth in the long jump with a distance of 5.30m. Natalyia Dunlap placed third in the triple jump at 10.86m.
 
On the men's side, NCCU swept the top three spots in the 100m dash and the top four positions in the 400m hurdles.
 
Deontae Williams won the 100m dash with a time of 10.63 seconds, while Jonathan Williams was the runner-up in 10.69 seconds and Joshua McClam was third in 10.89 seconds.
 
Kevin Vincent triumphed in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.54, followed by James Johnson in second place (55.35), Carlton Edwards, Jr. in third place (56.17) and Orane Morais in fourth (58.01).
 
Dominick Lemonious was the top collegiate finisher in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.30, while McClam contributed a second-place performance in the long jump with a measurement of 7.46m.
 
The Eagles won the 4x100m relay, consisting of McClam, Deontae Williams, Isaac Roberts and Jonathan Williams, in a time of 41.51.
 
The NCCU 4x400m relay squad of Ronnie Lovick, Deandre James, Victor Dunbar and Vincent placed second in 3:21.50.
 
Lovick added a third place effort in the 400m dash (50.31). Third place finishes were also turned in by Jedrek Higgins in the 800m run (1:58.01) and Mykol Branch in the high jump (1.93m).
 
NCCU returns to competition on March 18-19 at the Dennis Craddock Carolina Relays in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
