DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team scored a season-high nine runs to tally its first win of the season in a 9-5 nightcap victory over MEAC member Howard University on Friday afternoon at Parkwood Athletic Field.
The Bison pulled away late for a 10-4 win in the opener as the two teams split the non-conference twin bill. Howard finished the day at 2-12 overall and NCCU moved to 1-18.
Howard 10, N.C. Central 4 The Lady Eagles trailed 6-4 after five innings but the Bison tacked on four late runs to complete the game one victory. Senior second baseman highlighted Howard's 10-run outburst with four RBI, including a three-run homer in the seventh.
The Bison led from the onset after scoring twice in the top of the first.
NCCU also got on the board in the opening inning on an RBI-single by senior
Kayleigh Brueck.
Howard added an unearned run in the fourth before the two squads traded three runs in the fifth inning.

Jenny Tracy and senior
Casey Hargett were the table setters in the Lady Eagles rally attempt in the fifth with Tracy reaching on an infield single and Hargett doubling down the left field line. Junior
Dominique Wilson knocked in the first run on a fielder's choice, Brueck followed with another run-producing base hit and junior
Jennifer Allison followed with an RBI-groundout.
NCCU threatened most innings but stranded 10 runners on base.
After the Lady Eagles chased the first two Bison pitchers, sophomore Tara Castellanos hurled two shutout innings for Howard to preserve the visitors lead. Castellanos had three strikeouts before earning her first save.
Brueck reached base safely in three of four plate appearances. She had two of NCCU's five total hits while also drawing a walk. Brueck leads NCCU with five RBI.
N.C. Central 9, Howard 5 The Lady Eagles soared out to an 8-2 lead after three innings and then held off a relentless Bison lineup to win by four runs.
NCCU scored two runs in the first and three runs in both the second and third to take command. All nine Lady Eagles either had a hit, RBI or run scored in the early surge.
Senior leadoff batter
Markell Wylie set the tone by scoring in the first and ripping a two-run double in the second. Freshman
Aleyah Evans added a pair of hits and she joined classmate
Janeen Reynolds and Hargett with one run and one RBI.
After scoring once in both the second and fourth innings, Howard scored three more times in the fifth to pull within three. However, freshman reliever
Breanna Carter took over on the mound and got the last out of the fifth. Carter went on to pitch the final two innings and put up a pair of zeros to record her first collegiate save.
Senior starter
London Booker (1-7) garnered the win in 4 2/3 innings of work. Booker's fourth and final strikeout ended a bases loaded jam in the fourth.
Wylie tacked on one additional insurance run in the seventh. She led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Wilson for her third run scored of the contest. Wylie is batting .364 and has a .431 on-base percentage on the season.
