DURHAM, N.C. – Seniors
Dante Holmes (Baltimore, Md.) and
Jeremiah Ingram (Detroit, Mich.) combined for 43 points to help North Carolina Central University cage the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University, 90-66 at McDougald-McLendon Arena on Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 13.
It was a slow start to the game for both sides, and B-CU (9-16, 6-5 MEAC) got out of the gate with a 7-2 lead over the first four minutes. NCCU (9-15, 4-6 MEAC) slowly worked its way back into the game, and both teams jockeyed for pole position over the majority of the first half.
The turning point came late in the first period as Holmes hit three-consecutive treys, all assisted by
Dajuan Graf (Charlotte, N.C.) in just 65 seconds, taking the Eagles from being down by one point to go ahead by eight.
Holmes tossed in 14 of his game-high 22 points in the first 20 minutes to push the Eagles to a 38-31 advantage after act one, and NCCU held the lead from that point on.
NCCU expanded the lead to as many as 27 points in the second half on a spectacular 360 dunk by Ingram to hold a 77-50 cushion with 6:21 to play. Ingram collected 19 of his 21 points in the second frame, and pulled down nine rebounds to end just short of a double-double.
Kyle Benton (Long Beach, Calif.) turned in a 15 point performance with seven rebounds, and
Dajuan Graf chipped in 10 points and four assists.
Patrick Cole (Newark, N.J.) and
C.J. Wiggins (Richmond, Va.) battled for the game-high in assists with six and five, respectively.
The Eagles will host Florida A&M for its second-to-last home game of the 2015-16 season on Monday, Feb. 15.
