RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior guard
Morgan Jones led visiting North Carolina Central University with 10 points in an 83-33 women's basketball road loss at nearby North Carolina State University in newly renovated Reynolds Coliseum Wednesday evening.
The Wolfpack, who were receiving votes in the top-25 polls earlier in the season, are trying to get back into the national conversation after winning their fourth straight game. NC State improved to 9-2 overall, with all nine of its triumphs coming by double digits.
Freshman guard Aislinn Konig paced the Wolfpack with a career-high 26 points, including swishing six 3-pointers.
Jones added four rebounds, one assist and one steal to her team-high 10 points. Sophomore guards Dominque Adams and
Rodneysha Martin each added six points. Martin also dished out a career-high four assists. Junior forward
Kierona Morton had a solid performance with three points, team-high five rebounds and one block.
NC State set the tone of the game in the first quarter, shooting 60-percent better than NCCU in the opening 10 minutes. Both squads took 15 shots in that time span with the Wolfpack nailing 11 of their 15 tries for 73.3% precision compared to the Lady Eagles making just 2 of 15 attempts for 13.3%.
NCSU won the opening tip and scored 10 seconds into the contest and never trailed. Jones made a runner on NCCU's second possession to tie the score for the only time at 2-all. The Wolfpack followed with a 13-0 run to grab a double-digit advantage for the rest of the contest. The hosts hit four 3-pointers in the first period and led 27-4 at the end of the quarter.
The lead grew to 42-10 at halftime and 60-16 before winning by 50. That margin of victory was the widest of the year for NCSU and the most lopsided for NCCU.
The Wolfpack shot 46-percent from the field, including 10 three-pointers and dominated the glass with a 51-30 rebounding surplus. Junior forward Chelsea Nelson, who scored 12 points, led NC State on the boards with 10 rebounds to complete a double-double.
NCCU (1-7 overall) will return to Durham for two home games before the holiday break. The Lady Eagles will host UNCG on Sunday at 6 p.m. (new start time) and Presbyterian College on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
